(Weekly Radio Show airs Saturdays at 8AM)

Sept. 4 – Children & TV:  How Much Is Too Much?  – Are you concerned about how much time your child spends watching TV or playing video and computer games?  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting a child’s use of TV, movies, video and computer games to no more than two hours a day.  This show will look at the effects of too much “screen time” and offer suggestions for how to limit it, including advice for enforcing reasonable limits and guidance for selecting quality programs for children. We’ll talk with Dr Ari Brown, a pediatrician, executive board member of the Communications and Media Council for the American Academy of Pediatrics, author of the Baby 411 book series, and a mother of a tween and teenager. She serves as a medical advisor to Parents Magazine, WebMD, and ABC News

Sept. 11 – Prevent Drug Abuse In Your Home –You have the power to help protect your family from drug abuse.  For this show, we will talk with a Orchard Park Senior Detective John Payne, a former Department of Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Officer, who will provide tools and information about preventing drug abuse including tips on how to talk to your kids about drugs, suggestions on tackling and preventing drug abuse issues in your home, facts about drug use and drug abuse, warning signs, and advice on what parents can do if they suspect their child is using drugs.

Sept. 18 – Understanding Postpartum Depression – Many new moms have mood swings.  They feel happy one minute and sad the next.  Typically, the symptoms go away within ten days of delivery.  Some women, however, take longer to feel better or have more severe symptoms.  Depression that occurs within six months of childbirth may be postpartum depression.  It can make women feel restless, anxious, fatigued and worthless.  They may stop eating, have trouble sleeping and become frantic or paranoid.  Postpartum depression does not go away quickly.  For this show, we’ll talk with clinical psychologist Dr. Shoshana Bennett (known to her patients as “Dr. Shosh.”)  Dr. Shosh is a pioneer in the field and considered the "go-to" expert for postpartum depression. She is a survivor of two life-threatening, undiagnosed postpartum depressions. She founded Postpartum Assistance for Mothers in 1987, and is a former president of Postpartum Support International.

Sept. 25 – Making Sense of the College Admissions Process -- How many colleges should your child apply to?  What are colleges looking for in applicants?  What should your child do or avoid when applying?  How competitive is the application process?  Is it better to mail an application or apply online?  What role do high schools and parents have in the process?  We’ll answer these questions and more as we talk with Educational Consultant Carl “Sandy” Behrend, an expert in college planning who teaches, speaks and writes about the career and college admissions process and serves as a consultant to students, families and school districts.  Behrend will also talk about the upcoming 2nd Chance Conference, which offers WNY residents without a high school diploma an opportunity to explore and enroll in local GED preparation programs.

NEW SEGMENT ADDED – To help parents plan their family calendar, each week Peter Burakowski of the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau will join the show to talk about local events, openings, festivals and happenings occurring around town for families to enjoy. He’ll keep us up-to-date and current on all local happenings.
